Dock Jumping Title Listings

Dock jumping, also known as dock diving, is a competitive dog sport in which dogs are judged by the distance or height they jump when jumping from a dock into a body of water. Handlers may use a toy or other object to encourage a dog to jump, but dogs are usually not required to chase or retrieve whatever is thrown. Dock jumping originated with distance competition, but has evolved to sometimes include height (vertical) competition, which is a form of high jumping for dogs. Some organizations have further added speed retrieves and speed swims. Events are generally run in splashes or waves—different rounds consisting of two jumps per dog. Depending on the event, either the longer of the two jumps counts or both jump distances are added together. Typically, dock jumping competitions offer separate divisions for youth handlers (ages 7 – 15), veterans (dogs age 8 or over), and lap dogs (dogs 16” or less at the shoulder).

DockDogs

DockDogs is an independent governing and sanctioning body for dock jumping competitions. Through regional, national, and international events, dogs can compete in Big Air (distance), Extreme Vertical (height), Speed Retrieve (time), Speed Swim (time), and Iron Dog (combination of Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve). Highly ranked dogs can also compete in annual DockDogs National Championships and DockDogs World Championships. Dogs can earn national titles at nationally sanctioned competitions and regional titles at club affiliate sanctioned events. Titles do not have to be earned in order; however, once a title is earned, the next title earned must be in a higher division. After all waves are completed at each club or national competition, DockDogs offers divisional finals in which the top six dogs in each division may compete For more information, contact DockDogs at http://www.dockdogs.com.

SPLASH DOGS

Splash Dogs organizes, promotes, and sanctions competitive, yet family-oriented dock jumping events across the United States. Events include distance and vertical dock jumping. Splash Dogs tracks overall event and individual rankings; and offers a multi-level titling program for all participants in distance jumping. Additionally, dogs can earn national rankings in vertical dock jumping. For each title below, additional medal levels have been added to allow teams to continue to accomplish new titles and goals. These include: Bronze (10 jumps in a division); Silver (25 jumps in a division); Gold (50 jumps in a division) and Platinum (100 jumps in a division). Once a team achieves a medal level, the hyphenated level indicating the medal (-B for Bronze, -S for Silver, etc.) may be added to a particular title (e.g., SD–P, PD–G, etc.). The United Kennel Club (UKC) now recognizes Splash Dog as a UKC club which means that dogs can earn both Splash Dog and UKC dock jumping titles. UNITED KENNEL CLUB (UKC)

Ultimate Air Dogs and Splash Dogs, two leading dock jumping organizations, have partnered with the UKC and now offer UKC-recognized titling opportunities at their events. The UKC offers two different dock jumping competitions: Ultimate Air, which measures the distance of a dog’s jump; and Ultimate Vertical, which measures the height of a dog’s jump. In the Ultimate Air events, only one title is required at the Initial Distance and Distance Jumping Champion levels before moving to the next level. At the Grand Distance Champion level, a dog may earn Grand Distance Champion titles in multiple distance divisions. A dog will earn a Grand Distance Champion title in the first division in which it earns 300 points. Once the first Grand Distance Champion title is earned, a dog must then earn 450 points in a higher distance division to earn that Grand Distance Champion title. In the Ultimate Vertical events, only one title is required at the Initial Ultimate Vertical and Ultimate Vertical Champion levels before moving to the next level. At the Ultimate Vertical Grand Champion level, a dog may earn both Ultimate Vertical Grand Champion titles. The first Ultimate Grand Champion title earned will require 250 championship points. The second Ultimate Grand Champion title with require an additional 450 championship points. For more information, contact the UKC at http://www.ukcdogs.com; dogevents@ukcdogs.com; 100 E. Kilgore Road, Kalamazoo MI 49002-5584; or (269) 343-9020 extension 105 or 106.
